It was 6 years ago when we got an Italian Greyhound puppy and named her Morgan.

One afternoon my friend and I took Morgan for a walk in our busy Seattle neighborhood. It was a beautiful day and my friend, noticed that the apple trees were starting to bloom.

I stopped to look up at the blossoms as I was holding my retractable leash. Morgan was happily sniffing around about 10 feet away. As i studied the blossoms closely, my hand relaxed...

Suddenly, there was a sharp cracking sound. I realized the retractable leash had dropped from my hand and hit the cement with a hard thud and the sound frightened Morgan. She turned around to see the retractable leash handle 'running' towards her.

She turned and ran from the bouncing scraping handle that was in hot pursuit. The closer it got, the faster she ran, and she screamed in fear. We gave chase, trying to grab the leash or the dog, but she was far too fast. She ran blindly until she entered a high traffic street in the heart of Seattle.

At the very last second we were able to grab her collar and pull her out from under the wheels of a car as she entered a busy street. I picked up her trembling body to find that she was so frightened, she had deficated on herself. It was very frightening and very sad to witness this.

For the next three nights I just couldn't sleep. Each time I started to fall asleep, I was startled out of my sleep by 'the movie' of my sweet puppy screaming and running from the retractable leash. How could this have happened, I asked? It happened so fast. I just relaxed for a second and the retractable leash was out of my hand. I wondered if other dog owners were having the same problems.

I started observing dog owners who used retractable leashes. Seattle is a very urban town and there are a lot of dog owners who use a retractable leash. Many Seattlites take their dogs on a walk and combine the walk with running errands. People were fumbling and dropping retractable leashes all over the city! I observed dog owners at the park and the same thing was happening. It was what appeared to be an epidemic.

I am a fan of the retractable leash, but after my experience and after observing so many people having problems, I determined that a solution was in order. My friend and I put our heads together and began designing and testing. A year later, The Loop Safety System ™ was born.
